About this project

WEstjustice is a Community Legal Centre, providing free legal assistance to people in the western suburbs of Melbourne. WEstjustice’s purpose is to provide services that meet the legal needs of people in the western suburbs of Melbourne, in ways that address the systemic nature of disadvantage.

WEstjustice operates across a large catchment area with a diverse community. Their work helps people to deal with a broad range of everyday legal problems including consumer disputes, credit and debt, family law and family violence, fines, motor vehicle accidents, tenancy and more. WEstjustice also undertakes community legal education, law reform and advocacy.

Significant change

In late 2019, WEstjustice developed new plans for Impact and Strategy and began work to re-align their structure to better meet their purpose. Work had already commenced towards implementing this new structure when WEstjustice recognised the need for additional support for their Executive team to manage the change process. Front of mind was the need to enable a smooth transition and to ensure that staff and stakeholders were well informed and supported through the change process.

Support through the change process

Lirata worked with WEstjustice’s CEO and Executive team to support structural changes, and embed sound change management practice for the future.

Lirata consulted with senior staff to co-develop a comprehensive change management plan, and assisted its implementation through executive coaching and mentoring. Lirata also assisted in identifying ways in which new strategy and impact work could be integrated with elements of the restructure.

Strengthening management capability

To assist in embedding the new organisational structure and systems, Lirata is providing a range of other capability building support.

Lirata has undertaken several cycles of 360 Degree Performance Reviews for WEstjustice's CEO and senior and middle managers. Lirata's 360 Degree framework includes eight core capability areas across leadership and management. The performance reviews provide WEstjustice's managers with honest, constructive feedback that supports personal and professional growth.

Lirata has also provided a series of middle management training workshops, guided and supported improvements to work planning for individual staff, developed options for a new staff experience survey, and supported the leadership in identifying ways to monitor, guide and model a stronger organisational culture.

Project outcomes

Lirata's support helped WEstjustice's leaders to manage the restructure in ways which supported a positive experience of change for staff. Our 360 Degree Reviews and other capability building support is strengthening the skills and approaches of WEstjustice's current and future leaders.

Together, these initiatives provide the foundations for WEstjustice to achieve even stronger positive outcomes for the community in the years ahead.
